I have somehow gone 50 posts without talking about how fortunate I am to have a group of people who are near and dear to me. I am so fortunate to have built an inner circle in my life. The family I have made instead of being born into. They are the people who have been there for me, through good times and bad, through heaven and hell. They have always rallied behind me, keeping me company through dark times, opening their hearts and homes to me. So here’s an introduction to the family I’ve made my own.
My best friend Denny is my bestest friend in the world. We live 123972492372 miles away from each other and sometimes weeks can go by without a phone call, but I know he is there for me any time and every time. If I really needed him, he would hop on the next plane to Singapore. (Except he can’t do that now cos his passport is expired. Go fix it damnit D!). His entire extended family considers me part of their family and he is godfather to Zoey. My mom considers him and his brother Kory to be her sons as well and at some point we even talked about moving everyone together and living in a big communal home. While that hasn’t happened, I really do hope that we all move closer together soon.

These 3 ladies are truly my family.

They traveled halfway around the world to attend our wedding, dragging their spouses and even children along. Although to be fair Shawn already lives in Seattle 😛 But still, they humoured me by taking a 12 hour train ride from San Francisco to LA.
Emily and I have known each other since we were 12. That’s like over 23 years. She has been my “sister” for around that amount of time and my home was where she used to runaway to whenever she had a bust up with her mom. Now we are godmother to each others kids and she’s finally moving back to the north east so we can hang out more often again!
Irene and I have known each other since we were around 15, easily over 20 years as well. She always likes to joke that she is the original Irene before my wife came into the picture. Her mother is my Godma and I’m comfortable in her home as if it is my own. Her family treats me like their daughter and we used to do reunion dinners together. We’ve been there for each other, thru breakups and weddings, family deaths and births. I know that if I ever need someone to save me, she will be there.
Liz and I met in 2004 and except for a brief dark period, have been really close. Somehow she just gets me. The amazing thing is even after a break of a couple of years, when we reconnected again, it was like we never left each other’s lives. She’s like that naughty little sister I never had. The one who I always give good advice to, but never listens and eventually comes back to me when it all falls apart. And I love her anyway.

This is what our brunches look like now. People missing because we are not in the same country, but it’s ok our love and bond remains strong! Hopefully we can continue to have these brunches for a long time to come and eventually be able to do brunches altogether again.
So people, know that I love you and appreciate everything you all do. Big hugs and love to everyone. <3
